Be Still and Know

I found a new Truth — a little, test of my faith, when I was trying to understand what it means to "Be Still and Know". It's based on a favorite Bible verse of many Christians I talk to. Some have told me Ron, just be still. I must admit I had difficulty practicing: "Be still and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).

First, let's meditate on these paraphrases of Psalm 46:10:

"Be calm, rely on me – the I AM – living and breathing in you." (my paraphrase)

"Our God says, 'Calm down, and learn that I am God!'"

"Cease striving and know that I am God."

Know That I Am God

W

hatever you are facing, whatever storm may come, do you know the truth? When we have sever storms there are protocols, lists, and other activities we do to prevent harm to ourselves and others during the storm. Personal storm are no different, what do we do, where do we go, who do we tell? We are taught to do something, to scurry around going through our practiced routines. It is good to be prepared. Yet many of us forget the truth. This byte of truth is found in (Psalm 46:10) "Be still and know that I am God…." Somewhere in the middle of our calamity we forget this simple truth and find it difficult to be still.

Get The Whole Truth

The Truth is not in this selected verse, Be still, but in the surrounding verses and next chapter. Chapter 46 is only the knowledge or fact that there will be storms in our lives. "Be still and know that I am God" is just the first Protocol. It is like finding Strong shelter when the storm arives. We are to "Know" not to believe, feel, or think. But, to understand, and have been convinced, that He is God. Next, further on in Chapter 47, it says rejoice, sing praises to God. What....! How often do we do that? So, this is where I would like to start my Protocol when the storms arise.

In The Storm - Protocol 1:

It helps to imagine the storm raging outside right now. The situation is direr. Trees are flying in the air, rain coming down in buckets, and "You" are in your safe place. Now and only now can you "be still". But, only if you truly know that your safe place is greater than the storm that is raging outside. Maybe you might know the architect how he built your shelter, that it is on a good foundation, or the materials that were used were the best of its kind. Not knowing that you would start to doubt when you hear the rain or the creaking of the building. Knowing or not knowing is the key to being still and able to rejoice. Likewise, knowing that there is a God, knowing He loves you, understanding this to your core, even when your world is shaken, is your first and most important protocol. You can't say "Maybe God is not Big enough to handle my storm". I guess Size Does Matters.

Finding Peace - Protocol 2:

Finding Peace in your Storm, Read Protocol 1. This is to say that when you "Know God" He alone can and will give you peace. You do not have to rely on your survival gear or the weapons you carry. Your only defense in the storm is to know the God of the universe. He is Big enough to walk with you through the storm. When Protocol one and two have been established in you heart, mind, and soul there is nothing more to do but praise Him and rejoice!

So Lets Get Started!

We can close the chapter now (Psalm 46) that focused on all kinds of calamities. Knowing that God is who he said He is you can now get on with chapter 47. And bring praise to the one who is your shelter, provider, and who will walk with you through the storm.

Practice God's Presence

You can use your own songs and favorite bible verses to sing your own praises to God. The purpose is to stay in conscious contact with God throughout your storm, to "pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Rejoice always again I say rejoice (Philippians 4:4-8). As often as you can remember to praise, pray, and give thanksgiving to the one and only God
